There are moments I feel like breaking the bounds of what is possible and permissible. In arts it is when you work on a piece, letting the hands go where the heart desires, like running the fingers on the keyboard, producing sounds that have never existed. So it was with this piece I call Jazz.

I witnessed this scene in my Nigerian village as a child-When arrogant village bullies would on suspicion pick out some villagers, parade them though the village to the village square and force themto sit on spiky palm fruit bulks- Even then I felt this was injustice.

My major inspiration comes from the period I had to spend in the village during the Nigerian civil war. It was a period that forced local people into hard physical labour to survive the hardship of a warring country. the brunt of this hardship came heavily on the womenfolk. Then it was a common sight to see village women and girls with head-loads of farm stuff walking to and from the village farms. Children that had no one to be looked after accompanied their mothers on those tedious journeys. Those women saw hot sunny days, windy rainy days and dark tropical nights. These women including my mother remain my artistic heroines.
